We are seeing an increase in errors on customer creation. The error is affecting customers with EU taxation.
We've identified the root cause. The European VAT number verification tool (https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/) we use in our EU Tax module is currently unavailable. Our application is built to gracefully handle errors from this service but the service is currently returning an undocumented and unexpected response.
We are preparing a fix for this issue.

We are experiencing elevated error rate on our POST /api/v1/customers API endpoint. Our team is investigating and working to resolve this. We will provide updates as we learn more.
